Scarnati Announces March 3 Date for 29th Senatorial District Special Election

Harrisburg – In his role as Lieutenant Governor, Senator Joe Scarnati (R-25) has filed notice for a March 3, 2009 Special Election to fill the vacancy in the 29th Senatorial District.

Under the state Election Code, a special election can be called no sooner than 60 days from the date the election notice is filed.

“Scheduling this election for March 3 meets statutory requirements and will allow candidates time to present their message to voters,” said Scarnati. “There are pressing issues facing the Commonwealth, including a looming budget deficit that requires difficult decisions. It’s important that the citizens of the 29th Senatorial District have a senator in place to represent them on these significant fiscal matters.”

The seat has been vacant since the October 18 death of Senator James J. Rhoades, whose name remained on the November 4 election ballot and received the most votes.

The 29th Senatorial District includes all of Schuylkill County and parts of Berks, Carbon, Lehigh, Monroe and Northampton Counties.
