Scarnati Sworn In as Lieutenant GovernorWARREN—In a private ceremony, Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati was sworn in today as the next Lieutenant Governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Scarnati succeeds Lieutenant Governor Catherine Baker Knoll, who passed away in November after a battle with cancer. “I am honored to have been sworn in as Lieutenant Governor, but given the circumstances surrounding the ascension, this certainly is not a celebration,” Scarnati stated. “Catherine was a tremendous public servant and will be sorely missed. However, know that I respectfully accept this responsibility and will carry out the duties of this office with dignity and integrity.” Under the Constitution, Scarnati is required to hold both Lieutenant Governor and State Senate positions at the same time. “I look forward to serving in both capacities and am prepared for the many challenges facing this great state,” Scarnati added. “With challenge comes opportunity and I am confident that by working together with leaders on both sides of the aisle, we will be successful.” Senator Scarnati was sworn in by the Honorable Judge John M. Cleland. In addition, Scarnati did make brief remarks at the swearing-in ceremony, but felt that it was not appropriate to make an extended, eloquent speech. “Today is a day to continue rolling up our sleeves and meeting this fiscal crisis head-on, not diverting our attention with long, costly ceremonies,” Scarnati concluded. “I take this position with a great deal of pride, but I also realize that working families are struggling and our focus must be on improving the economic climate for all Pennsylvanians.” Senator Scarnati was re-elected last month to his third term in office, and subsequently was sworn in as interim President Pro Tempore for the second time. His Senatorial District includes all or portions of Warren, McKean, Potter, Tioga, Cameron, Elk, Jefferson, and Clearfield Counties.
