WARREN—State Senator Joe Scarnati of the 25th Senatorial District has been nominated by his Republican colleagues to become the next President Pro Tempore in the Pennsylvania State Senate.

"I am honored and humbled by the trust that my colleagues have shown in giving me the opportunity to lead this great institution," Scarnati stated.  "Without question, I stand ready to accept the many challenges that lie ahead and look forward to being more actively involved in both policy matters and budget discussions."

While it was evident that voters were not pleased with many of the initiatives taking place around the country, they did acknowledge that the Senate of Pennsylvania was moving in the right direction toward reform.  With a difficult election cycle, Republicans were successful in maintaining control of this body with a 29-21 margin.

"Certainly, the General Assembly and the Administration must place reform measures at the top of the agenda, but we must also work together in an effective, efficient manner to move Pennsylvania into a state that is more community and business friendly," Scarnati added.  "We have learned from past mistakes and are earning back the trust from the citizens who gave us this great opportunity in shaping the government of Pennsylvania.  This is an honor and privilege that I take very seriously."

Scarnati stated that there have been significant reforms since the primary election with the gaming reform package and the lobbyist disclosure reform act.  Also, the Senate moved quickly after the primary and eliminated car leases, as well as instituted employee contribution rates for health insurance.

These were landmark steps that were anticipated, desired, and ultimately acted upon.  We are moving in the right direction, but more must be done and reform will happen over the course of the next few years.

"Wherever I have been, I have found it vital to be a good listener, and this will be the primary foundation in which we can use as a springboard for further success," Scarnati stated.  "Quite frankly, we as legislators must be willing to work together on issues that can ultimately lead to a better quality of life for the residents and businesses of the Commonwealth."

Scarnati mentioned that he wants to bring a think first, act second type of attitude toward this leadership position.  He will be bringing the core values of his district to leadership with the focus on less, but more effective governance.

"In closing, I want to assure each and every person that I will continue to be open, honest, and accessible to the constituents of the 25th District," Scarnati stated.  "The transparency of government is not only important to the public, it is important to me as well and you will visibly see that take shape during my tenure as President Pro Tempore."
