Scarnati Says New Medicare Plan Will Cut CostsWarren- State Senator Joe Scarnati of the 25th district says it is time to take a stance against the soaring price of prescription drugs. "The price of prescriptions continues to increase," said Scarnati. "People are always looking to lead healthier lives, and as legislators we have to be aware of what is new on the market to ensure that they can do so." That is why Scarnati is urging people to take advantage of the new prescription drug plans being offered through Medicare, which will take effect on January 1, 2006. According to Scarnati, 'Medicare Part D' works to lower prescription prices by providing insurance coverage for consumers. These plans will be accessible to all individuals who currently use Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) and/or Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) regardless of age, income or health condition. Scarnati says users will pay a monthly premium, estimated at $35 a month for 2006 and then pay just a portion of what the prescription costs. He says, however, set costs for each individual plan will fluctuate, depending on what drugs the plan offers. "This is another step in the right direction," Scarnati stated. "Reducing the costs of medicine will put hard-earned money where it belongs, in the pockets of the people. I urge individuals to gather the necessary information regarding this plan and determine what best fits their needs." People have between November 15, 2005 and May 5, 2006 to join. The existing Medicare-approved drug discount cards will expire by May 15, 2006. People who have both Medicare and Medicaid have to decide what plan they want by no later then December 31, 2005. After this date, users will be automatically be enrolled into one of the plans. To choose, and join the plan that best meets your needs, you should have already received your "Medicare and You 2006" handbook. However, if you need additional information about the Medicare Part D prescription plan please feel free to call 1-800-MEDICARE or visit them on the web at www.medicare.gov .
